Support The Guardian. 30 years after Nirvana released their debut album, Bleach, we revisit Jonathan Freedland's 1994 report from the aftermath of Cobain's death. An icon of alienation. More From the archive.

I’m not a big fan of live album. ut hearing (or better, seeing) Blind Guardian in a live setting is something each metalhead should do, and so I’ll be making an exception for this live album. BG’s songs revel being played in a concert setting where the audience participation takes the song to another level, and now you can have the sing-alongs in the comfort of your own home and bang your head furiously as your family and friends stare from a safe distance. So do yourself a massive solid, cause Blind Guardian live is fucking great (swearing for fucking emphasis!!). As a fan of this band for over 20 years, this is a really great set of songs and a great set for the fans.

Awaken the Guardian remains an important album for the band’s fans worldwide. Decibel Magazine remarked in their Hall of Fame no. 134 entry that Each member still talks with great pride of its creation, each blown away by the feedback it has received since its release 30 years ago, each amazed at the powerful and positive impact it has had on so many lives. To all our family and friends, much gratitude. Awaken the Guardian Live consists of both festival performances in their entirety.

Blind Guardian came out with three more full-lengths in the decade since Tokyo Tales. As if to match their studio work in terms of sheer pomposity, Live is well over two hours long, touching upon every album, and virtually every classic a fan could hope to hear performed. Again contrary to Tokyo Tales; Live was recorded in spurts across a major world-spanning tour. Though Live is arguably the more definitive live album, it proves my original point. Every part of this release is as if to ride home the fact that, yes, Blind Guardian are indeed incredible.
