Music Of The Bahamas ‎(LP, Album, RE, 180). Joseph Spence was a phenomonally gifted guitar player who frequently sounds like three guitarists playing at once. According to the sleeve notes Spence had been entertaining some workers on a building site when Samuel B Charters happened onto the scene. He asked Spence if he could record him, Spence agreed, drained his bottle of rum and played for an hour without stopping - the result is this LP. Stunning technique and guttural vocalising make this a unique experience. The best track is 'I'm Going To Live That Life' - one of my 'desert island discs'.

The remarkable music on this album was recorded in 1958 and released two years later on the Smithsonian Folkways label. Not that it would be easy to even choose two dozen absolutely essential releases in this label's catalog, but the introduction of this artist is something guitar players in particular will be eternally grateful for - that is, unless they happened to find the genius of his playing discouraging. The combination of Spence's voice and guitar is one of music's most unforgettable. It is a low, rumbling voice that is sometimes simply moaning and mumbling, as if this was a Glenn Gould voice track.
