Glastonbury Fayre is a 1972 documentary film directed by Nicolas Roeg and Peter Neal of the 1971 Glastonbury Festival (known then as the Glastonbury Fair), which was held on 20–24 June 1971. The film is the first attempt to document the Glastonbury Festival, which in 1971 was in its second year. Glastonbury Fayre is notable for being photographed by Nicolas Roeg and being one of the first films produced by David Puttnam.
Glastonbury Festival (formally Glastonbury Festival of Contemporary Performing Arts) is a five-day festival of contemporary performing arts that takes place in Pilton, Somerset, England. In addition to contemporary music, the festival hosts dance, comedy, theatre, circus, cabaret, and other arts. Leading pop and rock artists have headlined, alongside thousands of others appearing on smaller stages and performance areas.
Glastonbury Fayre is a triple album released in 1972, comprising performances by acts who had appeared at the Glastonbury Festival in 1971 and others. Pink Fairies are an English rock band initially active in the London underground and psychedelic scene of the early 1970s. They promoted free music, drug use, and anarchy, and often performed impromptu gigs and other agitprop stunts, such as playing for nothing outside the gates a. ink Fairies at Glastonbury Fayre in 1971. The Festival moved to the time of the Summer Solstice and was known as the Glastonbury Fair. It had been planned by Andrew Kerr and Arabella Churchill who felt all other festivals at the time were over commercialised. It was paid for by the few who supported the ideal so the entrance was free and took a medieval tradition of music, dance, poetry, theatre, lights and spontaneous entertainment. The musicians who performed recorded a now very rare album. The Festival is also captured a la Woodstock by a 1972 film crew that included Nick Roeg, Sandy Lieberson and Si Litvinoff. This film was called Glastonbury Fayre. Acts included: Hawkwind, Traffic, Melanie, David Bowie, Joan Baez, Fairport Convention and Quintessence. Attendance: estimated at 12,000.
The 1971 festival spawned a Triple album featuring most of the bands, ( and also featured a track from the Grateful Dead, who should have been there as it was just the sort of bash they would have liked ) in addition to a long out of print film, ( now released on DVD at last ) which sometimes gets an airing on the T. Why did I not go ? Probably because being a student at the time I was so damn broke that I could not afford it, also perhaps because the 1970 Festival was deemed to be such a fiasco that many people thought that half the bands would not turn u. his was NOT uncommon in those days. Below there are a selection of stills sent to me by various people, along with some new pieces of information and photos of the stage.
