Orchestra: Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra. Conductor: Lorin Maazel. Composer: Richard Wagner. This is an outstanding CD; every lover of Wagner's music, especially the 'Ring' cycle, should have this TELARC CD-80154. It sounds just great, & the continuous/seamless music from one 'Ring' selection to the next is simply a fantastic idea that is executed to perfection. Lorin Maazel & the Berliner Philharmonic are to be congratulated on this splendid recording of orchestral highlights; as background music, it enhanced my recent 'Wagner: Der Ring des Nibelungen' PP presentation at the University of Belgrade

Performers: Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra Klaus Tennstedt, conductor. One is struck by the fact that the BPO, who must have been through all this music so often, can under a conductor who obviously inspires them, produce playing that is at once so polished and so fresh. One of the very finest Wagner orchestral collections in the catalog. An exciting collection for those who like their Wagner without voices and recorded with self-conscious brilliance. Indeed, the sound cannot fail to make an effect when it is so clear

Klaus Tennstedt conductor London Philharmonic Orchestra. Premiered in Munich in 1870, Die Walküre remains one of the most popular operas. Act 1 is often performed alone in concert, with its satisfying concentration on the very human story of the blood ties, love and loyalty between three characters. Packed full of thrilling music, it displays Wagner's musical exuberance and assured grasp of orchestral colouring, vividly brought to life in this live recording conducted by Klaus Tennstedt in 1991 (released here, from the London Philharmonic Orchestra’s archives, for the. The orchestral playing is at boiling point right from the start here, with Tennstedt on inspirational form. These must have been nights to remember for listeners at the Royal Festival Hall. Excellent sound quality’. Hi-Fi News, December 2016.

Klaus Tennstedt, who became the London Philharmonic Orchestra's music director in 1983, recorded the complete Mahler symphonies with the orchestra. The Klaus Tennstedt of a decade later was an entirely different person, however, as the remarkable concert on this programme demonstrates. A heavy smoker, in 1986 he was diagnosed with cancer of the throat and began a firce course of radiotherapy. Having seemingly conquered the disease, he attempted a comeback at the 1987 Proms, but collapsed during a rehearsal and had to be replaced. He resigned at once as music director of the orchestra and did not conduct it again until May 1988.
