While any John Coltrane album is rewarding, Kulu Sé Mama's proximity to astral jazz will make it, for some listeners, especially enjoyable. Alice Coltrane's and Sanders' music had several signature elements: avowed spirituality; prominent use of African and Asian percussion and drone instruments (emblematically, the Indian tamboura); vocalized saxophones heavy on velvet-sandpaper multiphonics; sweeping pianos and/or harps; hummable tunes; rock steady ostinatos; and long, lyrical improvisations. At its best, the combination produced trance-like music of transcendent beauty

Kulu Sé Mama is an album by jazz musician John Coltrane. Recorded during 1965, it was released in early 1967 as Impulse! A-9106 (AS-9106 for the stereo version). The title piece and "Selflessness" were recorded in October 1965 and feature a large ensemble including Sanders, Garrett, Butler and Lewis

The album was considered the "spiritual follow-up to A Love Supreme. It features Coltrane and Pharoah Sanders as soloists, both playing tenor saxophones. Much of the recording is avant-garde, featuring extensive passages in free rhythm and extended saxophone techniques such as honked and overblown notes, as well as multiphonics. This would be the last Coltrane recording with long-time partners drummer Elvin Jones and pianist McCoy Tyner.

John Coltrane is one of my all time favourites but clearly some of his music takes slightly longer to get into than other; you ned to grow the ears to hear Selflessness for example but if you put in the listening time you may find you are uploading Ascension onto your iPod to listen to on the journey home from work.
