Ian Lovdahl This is my first Augury album, and it pains me to say that, because I've clearly been sleeping on these tech death magicians for a while. I keep coming back to Illusive Golden Age for the progressive songwriting, sweet bass, and THE BEST brutal death vocals of the year. 11/50 on my 2018 year end list. Illusive Golden Age’ puts out no airs of expectation with it’s outpouring of inspired ideas and new adventures in melodic/progressive death metal. Instead the band have kept their heads down and focused on this modern vision for prog-death that has just enough technique to feel world class without a hint of the more pompous side of Augury‘s beginnings. Parallel Biospheres is likewise a standout as I felt it gave a nod to the style of their second album but improved upon it’s brutality with unexpected harshness rather then simply smoothing over it’s ugliness. A definite recommendation for prog-death fans and technical death folks who aren’t offended by melodic death prevalence.

Illusive Golden Age has Augury packing as much as they feasibly can into a forty-five minute tour through everything they can throw at us. Most of the time the music sticks to the group’s trademark hybridizing of genres, to the point where describing them would probably take longer than listening to the music itself. Illusive Golden Age is only the group’s third album, but like its two predecessors it is absolutely stuffed with music - a benefit of a nine-year gap perhaps, but also something that Augury have made their trademark. Within the opening minutes of the album’s title track, you’ll have been whiplashed through not only Patrick Loisel’s aforementioned vocal variations, but also a veritable smorgasbord of guitar and plenty of bass wandering from Forest Lapointe, and it becomes quickly overwhelming.

An immediate distinction that can be made in the opening seconds of the album is that Augury actually exhibit a sense of purpose in every decision made in every song. Rather than arbitrarily connecting riffs together, the band concentrates on how the track is methodically assembled in its entirety; due to this conscious process, a given entry on the record feels cohesive in its presentation, every component unified harmoniously.
