Archie Bell & the Drells was an American R&B vocal group from Houston, Texas, and one of the main acts on Kenneth Gamble and Leon Huff's Philadelphia International Records

Infectious and utterly danceable, "Tighten Up" became Bell's claim to fame, even though he and the Drells had other hits, including "I Can't Stop Dancing" and "(There's Gonna Be A) Showdown" after they began working with Philly soul producers and writers Kenny Gamble and Leon Huff. All of these are included in this succinct introduction to Archie Bell & the Drells (as well as the fine "A World Without Music"), and for listeners looking for a set with just the hits, this one fills the bill with no frills and no fuss.

Archie Bell formed his back-up singing group the Drells in 1966 with four local friends from Junior High School in Houston, TX. In 1967 Bell’s career got sidetracked when he was drafted and sent to Vietnam. While he was on leave back in the States in 67, he cut his most famous single Tighten Up, which became a hit, selling almost three million copies. The first time I heard the album I had to listen to it again. It opens up with Tighten Up (Part 1), but it’s a different mix than the one on the 45 that you hear on the radio all the time. This version starts off with an open bass line and seems a little slower. No matter which way it’s played though, it’s still a classic tune that has short drum break towards the beginning.

Tighten Up is an album by American funk band Archie Bell & the Drells, released under Atlantic in 1968. The design of the album cover was by Loring Eutemey. Instrumental backing provided by the . Members included: Cal Thomas and Will Thomas on guitar, Jerry Jenkins on bass, Robert Sanders on organ, Dwight Burns on drums, Darryl Bursby on sax, Clarence Harper on trumpet, and Leroy Lewis & Nelson Mills on horns.

Archie Bell & The Drells were a soul group signed to Kenny Gamble and Leon Huff's record label. Gamble and Huff were prolific songwriters, but this song was written by Bell and the group's guitarist, Billy Butler. The song is about a dance, and the title has a double meaning: "Tighten Up" can mean to play music together in tempo or tune, with a psychological element that the band is emotionally engaged in the music. His version can be found on the 1968 album Say It Live And Loud: Live In Dallas. This was used in the 2007 movie Talk To Me, which is about Washington . radio personality Ralph "Petey" Greene. Kenny Gamble and Leon Huff explained in a 2008 interview with National Public Radio that along with Bunny Sigler, who was a producer at their record label, they often sang backup on records for their artists, so in the studio, they were "The Drells.
