The Ultimate Yma Sumac Collection may very well live up to its title; at the very least, it's likely the most comprehensive overview of her recordings yet assembled. Therefore, the question is, is it better to go with a collection (which contains three previously unreleased cuts and four rare stereo mixes) or an official album, namely her Voice of the Xtabay, which Richie Unterberger calls her "first and most popular release.

Yma Sumac (/ˈiːmə ˈsuːmæk/; September 10, 1923 – November 1, 2008), was a Peruvian coloratura soprano. In the 1950s, she was one of the most famous exponents of exotica music. Sumac became an international success based on her extreme vocal range. She had six-and-a-half octaves according to some reports, but other reports (and recordings) document four-and-a-half at the peak of her singing career. A typical trained singer has a range of about three octaves.

Most Yma Sumac albums seem to treat her like a musical sideshow freak. This album is a noteable exception in which every song is an example of Sumac's prodigious talent, not merely the preternatural five-octave range of her voice. There have been various other singers whose most outstanding characteristic is their vocal range, but few of them have Sumac's sensitivity, control, and overall expressive artistry. The remastering is impeccable, and the liner notes/bio surpass anything previously released with her recordings - featuring photos of her from the '50s to the present.
