Fourth is the only Soft Machine's studio album, recorded with the same line-up as previous release (Third in this case). If Third was for band a revolutionary step from jazzy psychedelic pop/rock to complex jazz-rock territory, Fourth is excellent evolutionary example. You will hardly find band's psychedelic pop/rock roots on Fourth, they are gone forever (both together with Wyatt vocals;dissatisfied with new direction he will leave band soon after Fourth will be released.

Fourth is the fourth studio album by the jazz rock band Soft Machine, released in 1971. - Overview - The numeral "4" is the title as shown on the cover in all countries, but a written-out title appears on the spine and label. This was the group's. 1971 studio album by Soft Machine.

Soft Machine's collective skill is hyper-complex and refined, as they are extremely literate in all fields of musical study. Fourth is the band's free purging of all of that knowledge, woven into noisy, smoky structures of sound. Their arcane rhythms have a stop-and-go mentality of their own that sounds incredibly fresh even though it is sonically steeped in soft and warm tones. Obviously there is a lot of skillful playing going on, as the mix of free jazz, straight-ahead jazz, and Gong-like psychedelia coalesces into a skronky plateau

Fourth - or 4 - is the group's first all-instrumental album and features a mix of free jazz, straight-ahead jazz and psychedelia. It was also the last of their albums to include drummer and founding member Robert Wyatt. The album features Hugh Hopper, Mike Ratledge, Elton Dean and Wyatt. Soft Machine were an English experimental, psychedelic, progressive rock band from Canterbury, named after the book The Soft Machine by William S. Burroughs. They were one of the central bands in the Canterbury scene. Some people have told me to avoid Fourth because it marked the period where the Soft Machine made the complete change into straight up jazz, and moved completely away from rock (or progressive rock) elements. So I went into Fourth thinking I had a pretty good idea what to expect.
