Smile is the sixth studio album by American rock band The Jayhawks, released on May 9, 2000. It reached number 129 on the Billboard 200 and number 14 on Billboard's Top Internet Albums chart. Smile marks a move away from the band's long-time alt-country stylings to a more pop approach.

With Smile, the Jayhawks drop yet another sizable chunk of their alt-country sound by the roadside, adding in its place healthy doses of power pop and modern electronic music. Almost half of Smile's songs feature looped percussion, overdubbed drum tracks, or flat-out, funky backbeats. Little blips of sound skitter underneath the mostly acoustic guitars on the wistful "What Led Me to This Town" and make "Queen of the World" a worthy candidate for a dance remix (if the Jayhawks were ever to consider such a thing)

And this album, Smile, starts off like it could be their most Sunday album to date. It opens with an acoustic strum, a decremental piano bar, another acoustic strum, and again, a decremental piano, this time mimicked by an electric guitar in the background. Wake up/ Put your shoes on," sings frontman Gary Louris. For instance, during the following track, "I'm Gonna Make You Love Me," the Jayhawks are indulging in their trademark style of ruralternative when (presumably) Ezrin douses Louris' voice in reverb during the bridge. In doing so, he pulls the music out of the barroom and artificially implants it into a bad sci-fi novel.

Generally, it's the harmonizing. But, often times I am lifted by the lyrics and accompanying musical phrasing that distinguishes The Jayhawks from so many other artists of this genre. Smile" is a mellow ride and easy listen. Or consider a donation? #73.

Since 1985, the Jayhawks have valued craftsmanship and sincerity above all else; originality has been a poor country cousin. But with their sixth album, these grandpappies of the Americana movement try on a more jagged, if still countrified, rock sound. They end up sounding like every other band who ever heard Sgt. Pepper's and midperiod .
