On The Corner - Sealed Miles Davis vinyl LP album record USA PC31906 COLUMBIA. Miles Davis - On The Corner My take on this album is that this is what traditional African music would sound like if it was played on 70s styled psychedelic electronic instruments. Originally it had been assumed that the only guitarist on here was McLaughlin, but slowly rumors surfaced that the lesser known Dave Creamer also provided some great guitar work. Once upon a time in the early 80s I was looking at music ads in the SF bay area and saw Creamer had an ad in which he offered guitar lessons. I talked with him about lessons and finally asked if he was one of the guitar players on On the Corner to which he cheerfully.

On The Corner, like every one of his releases since Miles In The Sky, is more fusion Jazz than cool jazz. Instead of the slightly more structured, but still free-flowing, sweeping jazz of Kind of Blue, we get the mammoth structures of Bitches Brew, but without the pure innovation and entertainment value of that record. Critics scorned this album, and it’s been widely forgotten. But that doesn’t mean it’s a bad record. The combination of funk, jazz, and rock is interesting, to say the least, and Davis is a trumpeting god. It’s good, and that just goes to show how good Miles is, as this is one of his worst records. But only God knows what atrocity he would have made in an attempt to pry today’s black teens from their Lil Wayne.

Davis stripped everything back to endlessly repetitive, circular, and hypnotic rhythm based on the foundation of then 19-year-old bassist Henderson's minimal grooves with an array of percussionists along with a trap kit to shore it up like an impenetrable wall. The use of everything from cowbells and woodblocks to congas and tables enabled the musicians to dig deep into the territory of beat and rhythm.

The music of Miles Davis from the first half of the 1970s deserves more serious examination and certainly more recognition and acclaim. It is remarkable music in that it integrates a universe of sounds. It's not simply bringing in the ethnic influence of a foreign culture, as trumpeter Dizzy Gillespie did decades earlier by bringing Caribbean dance rhythms into his sound. While each tune on The Complete On The Corner Sessions is a continual revelation, not all are completely successful as refined artistic statements. It's the nature of the improv business. On "Jobali," for example, Michael Henderson lays down a riff, the sort of structure he's used before and will use again, but here it's just not as interesting and feels unrelenting and insistent rather than a skeletal form onto which a composition may develop and unwind.
