Pepper album cover due to concerns that the use of his image would cause offence to the people of India. Its motto is No man is at all times wise and the organisation continues to look after its own members, dependents of deceased members, and charities. Its inclusion on the Sgt Pepper album cover is a nod to both George Harrison’s (N. 5) love of India and John Lennon’s (N. 2) love of Lewis Carroll (N. 2), whose Caterpillar in Alice’s Adventures In Wonderland smokes a hookah.
In spite of this, Pepper outlived all of them while forging a unique and personal sound. Pepper, along with Desmond and Lee Konitz, were among the few small-combo saxophonists able to forge an individual sound despite the long shadow of Bird. Art Pepper's professional career can be divided into three main eras: Early, 1950 to 1960-The Early Show marked Pepper's first recording as leader. This period included his affiliation with Savoy, Blue Note, and Contemporary Records. It saw the release of the truly legendary recordings Art.

Pepper’s sound distinctly different. Whereas Revolver sounds like a rock and roll album, with its crunchy guitars and warm, fizzy ambience, Sgt. Pepper’s is decidedly refined, lacking the low-midrange tones that gave Revolver much of its propulsive power. Emerick puts the difference down to the choice of studio. In the months prior to making Sgt. Pepper’s, McCartney had fallen under the spell of the Beach Boys’ 1966 release, Pet Sounds. He was particularly enamored of Brian Wilson’s melodic bass work, which is especially prominent on the album. The thing that really made me sit up and take notice was the bass lines, McCartney says. That, I think, was probably the big influence that set me thinking when we recorded Pepper. On previous albums, McCartney always laid down his bass parts with the rest of the group, but on Sgt.
