Josef Lhévinne (13 December 1874 – 2 December 1944) was a Russian pianist and piano teacher. Lhévinne wrote a short book in 1924 that is considered a classic: Basic Principles in Pianoforte Playing. Asked how to say his name, he told The Literary Digest it was lay-VEEN. Joseph Arkadievich Levin (the name was altered in western Europe by a manager who thought "Lhévinne" more distinctive and less Jewish) was born into a family of musicians in Oryol south of Moscow.
Sergei Vasilyevich Rachmaninoff (Серге́й Васи́льевич Рахма́нинов) (1 April 1873 – 28 March 1943) was a Russian composer, virtuoso pianist and conductor of the late Romantic period, some of whose works are among the most popular in the Romantic repertoire. Born into a musical family, Rachmaninoff took up the piano at age four. He graduated from the Moscow Conservatory in 1892, having already composed several piano and orchestral pieces.

Official Post from The Piano Files: One of my all-time favourite Chopin recordings is Mischa Levitzki's November 21, 1929 recording of the Nocturne in C Minor O. 8 N., which was never issued on 78rpm discs. I remember my delight in the late 1980s when I found at a second-hand record store the International Piano Archives LP devoted. Mischa Levitzki plays Chopin's Nocturne No. 13 in C Minor Op. 48 No. 1. One of my all-time favourite Chopin recordings is Mischa Levitzki's November 21, 1929 recording of the Nocturne in C Minor O.
