Beak (stylized BEAK and also named Recordings 05/01/09 17/01/09) is the self-titled debut studio album by British band Beak, released by the label Invada in October 2009. It was improvised and recorded in a twelve-day period without any overdubbing or repair.
Beak (stylized as BEAK ) are an English electronic music band, consisting of Geoff Barrow (of Portishead) with Billy Fuller (Robert Plant) and Will Young (Moon Gangs), who replaced Matt Williams (MXLX, Fairhorns) in 2016. Beak released their self-titled debut album on 16 November 2009. All tracks were written over a twelve-day session in Bristol, England.

Throughout the album, Fuller’s bass dominates, and the way Barrow and Williams play off of him shows that BEAK knew what they were doing with their self-imposed limits. Yet BEAK rarely feels limited in scope, especially when the band flirts with jazz on "The Cornubia" or lends Battery Point some post-rock grandeur with shimmering guitars.
Beak is a project of Geoff Barrow (of Portishead) with fellow Bristol musicians Billy Fuller (Fuzz Against Junk) and Matt Williams (Team Brick). Their self-titled debut was released in November 2009 on Barrow's own label, Invada Records.
What a defiantly strange album Portishead's Geoff Barrow has made here. Beak sounds like almost nothing else going around in 2009, though admittedly some of it sounds an awful lot like 1971. It's menacing and even potentially alienating. Beak is off the cuff in the best sense, a burst of itchy inspiration. Many of the same influences colored Portishead's Third, but Beak unshackle them from singer and song structure, gaining intensity for what it loses in memorability. There's a ruthlessness to Barrow's writing here, especially in regards to rhythm.
