One could argue Sandy Denny left Fairport Convention at just the right time - her final album with the group, 1969's Liege & Lief, was both a masterpiece and a millstone, a brilliant work they would never top - but her instincts were not as keen in terms of launching her solo career. Denny not unreasonably wanted a showcase for her own songwriting, but after leaving Fairport she opted to join Fotheringay, a talented folk-rock band but one that was neither as interesting nor as visionary as Fairport. But as good as the original songs were, and as compelling as Denny's vocals may have been, The North Star Grassman and the Ravens feels tentative and uneven. While Denny had the strength to do rock-oriented material, the covers of Bob Dylan's "Down in the Flood" and Brenda Lee's "Let's Jump the Broomstick" sound sloppy and meandering, and as sympathetic and expert as the production may be, the deference to Denny's vocals leaves the music a bit pale in comparison, while most of the tracks lack. the personality they deserve.
Sandy Denny live in 1971 playing The North Star Grassman and The Ravens. Denny had apparently suffered from substance abuse problems for some time, and by 1977 her addictions were obvious to others. During her pregnancy, she drank and took cocaine. Linda Thompson told The Guardian that shortly after her daughter Georgia's birth, Denny "was crashing the car and leaving the baby in the pub and all sorts of stuff.
Denny became a solo artist because her previous group Fotheringay dissolved when producer Joe Boyd left to take up a job with Warner Brothers in California when the band were halfway through a second album that was left unfinished until 2008 when it came out as Fotheringay 2. Denny then launched the sequence of solo albums that underlie the claim that she i. Humphries, Patrick (2011). Universal-Island Records.

Born Alexandra Elene MacLean Denny on Jan. 6, 1947, Sandy Denny added her inimitable, infectious alto to the great British folk-rock records of the late 1960s, working with The Strawbs, Led Zeppelin and Fairport Convention, who all wanted to bring electric-rock ingenuity to folk's cliquish orthodoxy. In fact, Richard Thompson, who would become her musical co-conspirator, dubbed Denny the "most important singer of generation . But after one album, Fotheringay split and Boyd got his wish: Denny would finally record her first album. On The North Star Grassman And The Ravens, Denny is introspective and sentimental; her covers of Brenda Lee's bluesy "Let's Jump The Broomstick" and Bob Dylan's honkytonk "Down In The Flood" almost seem out of place. The traditional folk singer had found her own voice, and in this process, unmasked her fragility and innocence.
