Bright Eyes was an American indie rock band founded by singer-songwriter and guitarist Conor Oberst. It consisted of Oberst, t and producer Mike Mogis, trumpet and piano player Nate Walcott, and a rotating lineup of collaborators drawn primarily from Omaha's indie music scene. Bright Eyes is signed to Saddle Creek Records, a Nebraska-based label founded by Conor Oberst's brother Justin Oberst and Bright Eyes member Mike Mogis.

On Digital Ash this comes out as a long hard look at his own flaws. I started listening to Bright Eyes in high school. I lost interest in a lot of those songs with my own teenage angst. Digital Ash I still listen to regularly and find something new every time. A note of the vinyl packaging. Nothing really out of the ordinary. The album art is cool, the black vinyl is in a nice plastic sleeve. No bells and whistles here.

Digital Ash has the claustrophobic feel of a singer locked up with a computer, and it's distractingly chipper, like Rilo Kiley in their own Dntel homages; not every Bright Eyes record has to be an emotional epic, but Digital Ash feels like a practice run. Consider it version . If Digital Ash sounds like indie kids breaking into pop, its sister disc, I'm Wide Awake, It's Morning, is a red-blooded folk album that's coincidentally built to be hugely, hugely popular.

The album’s not all gold though (as evidenced by the disappointing span of average tracks during the middle section of the record. but overall, it’s hard to find too much fault in Bright Eyes’ work here (especially when considered how much heart and soul he must have poured into the album’s superior brother). Some may have questioned Oberst’s motives here, but a few listens and surely they will be convinced. The Max Levine Ensemble OK Smartypants. AIDS Wolf Cities of Glass.

The superbly titled Digital Ash is strangely backloaded: The good songs don’t start kicking in until about halfway through, after many synth glitches and botched break beats. But once it gets going, it’s phenomenal, with OMD-style guitar and keyboard hooks from the Yeah Yeah Yeahs’ Nick Zinner, the wispy indie-rock love god who takes up almost as much eyelash-cheekbone room as Oberst

While this album is not the most beloved by Bright Eyes fans, I find the lyrics deep and incredibly relatable. Some of my favourite songs are contained within.
