Idiot Stare's origins go back to their former incarnation STG in 1989. Formed in 1994, Idiot Stare spent the 90's recording their first two albums, "Blinded" and "The Hate Cage. During this time members contributed songs to over 20 compilations and lent their producing talents to various recordings and remixes for other bands in the genre.

The sessions for the album began before the recording of Bowie's Low (1977); thus, The Idiot has been called the unofficial beginning of Bowie's Berlin period.
