And Ihsahn on Radical Cut is also incredible. In 2002 Arcturus managed to astonish and surprise again with "The Sham Mirrors". It combines characteristics of the first two albums with a lot of new elements: again the band's creativity and joy of experimentation seem to be immense; again they are ahead of their time.

The Sham Mirrors' - Arcturus (8/10). With another album, there are new developments for the avant-garde metal act known as Arcturus. What comes as a surprise is that despite these musicians' background, the music here is not black metal, but rather a highly theatrical brand of progressive metal. The Sham Mirrors' is another challenging album from Arcturus, although it is nowhere near as shocking as 'La Masquerade Infernale' was for me. This is arguably the best thing that Arcturus has released in any case, and it is a shame they stopped making music together at the peak of their work.

Over its first three albums (if you include the "remix" disc Disguised Masters), Arcturus established a pattern of radically changing its sound each time, a trend that continues with The Sham Mirrors, the band's third "official" studio album. The constant thread throughout all the group's work, and again here, comes from er Steiner "Sverd" Johnsen, whose sinister, often carnival-esque harmonies and dramatic synth arrangements have a pretty clear stamp by now. Beyond that, though, comparisons to other Arcturus albums are difficult.
