There are a number of different influences floating around on Lake of Violet‘s album The Startling Testimony of Plumb Lines – an understandable result, considering the cast that makes up the band and their diverse backgrounds. The first sense that you get from the album, though, as Backward Light kicks off, is a ritualistic aura. This is quite similar to the works of the heavier side of post-rock, retaining the cold detachment of the genre of the mid-’90s. Yet, Lake of Violet take an extra step and include acoustic passages in their work. It is fairly surprising the first time this occurs with Dark Blue Square, as the track feels a bit out of place from the rest of the album, with a strong folk rock tone and extravagant guitar leads. It is still a great track, but feels more like an interlude when it appears.
Said supergroup, Lake of Violet, was founded by André Foisy (who already juggles committments to cultural anthropology, yoga, and musician in Locrian and Kwaidan) and former Minsk (and current Cedars of Lebanon) drummer Anthony Michael Couri. Those two names alone already paint a fairly clear-if ure of what a listener might expect from a collaborative recording, but then took it up a notch inviting Sun Splitter bassist Jacob Essak nd Neil Jendon (who handles guitar, vocals, synths, of Kwaidan and Catherine) into the fray.

It was already a given that Lake of Violet’s new album would be worth hearing because of the label that’s bringing it out - Gilead Media - and the alluring cover art and intriguing album title (The Startling Testimony of Plumb Lines) sealed the deal. But when I learned who is in the band, I became not merely interested in the music but intensely curious. The line-up consists of guitarist André Foisy (Locrian, Kwaidan), drummer Anthony Michael Cori (Cedars of Lebanon, ex-Minsk), bassist Jacob Essak (Sun Splitter), and vocalist Neil Jendon (Kwaidan, Catherine).
