Achtung Baby was widely regarded as a sonic and visual reinvention of the band: a step too far in some territories, where Adam's nude image on the sleeve was covered with an appropriately fixed X or clover. In 1992, Bono described Achtung Baby as 'the sound of four men chopping down The Joshua Tree' while Jon Pareles of the New York Times wrote that 'stripped-down and defying its old formulas, U2 has given itself a fighting chance for the 1990's'. The album won a Grammy Award for Best Rock Performance and became one of the most significant records of the nineties and of U2’s career.

Achtung Baby was U2’s first full length album of the 1990’s and their seventh album of their career. The album was produced by Brian Eno and Danny Lanois. Lanois acted as primary producer, and Mark Ellis, aka Flood returned as the engineer for the album. Eno assisted, working with the band for a week at a time, before leaving for a month or more at a time. The band interested in the new Europe emerging decided to start recording in Berlin and arrived in the city on October 3, 2000 on the last flight into East Berlin before the reunification of Germany.
