Long May You Run is not a Neil Young solo album. The pairing, though it proved short-lived and had, in fact, ended before this album was released, must have seemed commercially logical. Like Young, Stills had seen his record sales decline after a successful period following the 1970 breakup of CSNY.

Well, it was Back in Blind River in 1962 When I last saw you alive But we missed that shift On the long decline Long may you run. Why couldn't Stills and Young do the same thing? Maybe they could have (and, actually, this was the first gold album for either in two years) if they had made a better record together. Young's songs were pleasant newly written throwaways with the exception of the title track, a trunk song he had written as a tribute to an old car, it’s a brilliant performance and would have fit any of his solo albums at the time.

In 1976, Stephen Stills and Neil Young formed The Stills-Young Band and released an album called Long May You Run, which turned out to be somewhat ironic when the collaboration quickly stalled. Stills and Young wrote separately for the album, which Stephen contributing four songs, and Young adding five, including the title track. Stills is a longtime collaborator of Neil's, having worked with him first in Buffalo Springfield and then in Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young. However, they had a falling out only nine days into the Long May You Run tour

Long May You Run. Critic Score. Clearly Young & Stills had a fixation on the islands. My guess is that it had tons to do with drugs. And, given Still's penchant for 'blow' I'm guessing.
