This album contains a fine straight-ahead set featuring tenor saxophonist Charlie Rouse (who had long had an immediately recognizable tone) in a quartet with pianist Hugh Lawson, bassist Bob Cranshaw and drummer Ben Riley. Other than Thelonious Monk's "Well You Needn't" and Thad Jones' "A Child Is Born," the material is somewhat obscure (originals by Rouse, Lawson and Shirley Scott) and generally a bit complex, but always swinging.

Charlie Rouse (April 6, 1924 – November 30, 1988) was an American hard bop tenor saxophonist and flautist. His career is marked by his collaboration with Thelonious Monk, which lasted for more than ten years. Rouse was born in Washington, DC in 1924. At first he worked with the clarinet, before turning to the saxophone.

Moment's Notice 1977. Possessor of a distinctive tone and a fluid bop-oriented style, Charlie Rouse was in Thelonious Monk's Quartet for over a decade (1959-1970) and, although somewhat taken for granted, was an important ingredient in Monk's music. Charlie Rouse's unique sound began to finally get some recognition during the 1980s. He participated on Carmen McRae's classic Carmen Sings Monk album and his last recording was at a Monk tribute concert.

Les Jazz Modes were a small, short-lived experimental jazz group whose front line consisted of Charlie Rouse and French Horn player Julius Watkins, with pianist Gildo Mahones leading the rhythm section. They enlisted a variety of session players according to recording session needs. They cut a total of five albums in the 1950s for the Dawn and Atlantic labels: Jazzville, Les Jazz Modes (1956), Mood in Scarlet, The Most Happy Fella, and The Jazz Modes (1959).
