Preston ‎– Choral Works. Choir – San Francisco Symphony Chorus (tracks: 1-1 to 1-5). Composed By – Johannes Brahms. Conductor – Herbert Blomstedt (tracks: 1-1 to 1-5). Contralto Vocals – Jard Van Nes (tracks: 1-1 to 1-5). Liner Notes – Luis Carlos Gago, Sigrid Konrad.

Blomstedt conducts these works with attention to nuance, detail and balance. There is a subtlety of attack quite perfect for Brahms and engineering that is detailed, warm and blended. Far better than one heard on the DGG Abbado recordings of this rep made in Berlin around the same time. The primary competition today comes from Gardiner who delivers incredibly transparent and exciting performances, but to my knowledge his choral recordings accompany the symphonies making them more expensive to collect. Brahms often struggled to get his works precisely the way he wanted them (remember that it took nearly twenty years for him to complete his First Symphony), but the struggle has proven worth it for classical music lovers the world over. In particular, he excelled inside the choral genre-and not just in his much-loved and powerful German Requiem.

The Grammy Award for Best Choral Performance has been awarded since 1961. There have been several minor changes to the name of the award over this time: In 1961 the award was known as Best Classical Performance - Choral (including oratorio). From 1962 to 1964 it was awarded as Best Classical Performance - Choral (other than opera). In 1965, 1969, 1971, 1977 to 1978 and 1982 to 1991 it was awarded as Best Choral Performance (other than opera).

chamber and solo works. Bernstein was the first conductor to give a series of television lectures on classical music, starting in 1954 and continuing until his death. He was a skilled pianist, often conducting piano concertos from the keyboard. He was also a critical figure in the modern revival of the music of Gustav Mahler, the composer he was most passionately interested i. .In the late 1970s Bernstein conducted a complete Beethoven symphony cycle with the Vienna Philharmonic, and cycles of Brahms and Schumann were to follow in the 1980s. Other orchestras he conducted on numerous occasions in the 1970s include the Israel Philharmonic, the Orchestre National de France, and the Boston Symphony Orchestra.

Johannes Brahms struggled with his work for a long time, and his efforts paid off. The legendary Herbert Blomstedt presents his interpretation of his Symphony no. 1 with the Sächsische Staatskapelle Dresden. And at the piano, Leif Ove Andsnes plays the great composer's first Piano Concerto. This recording is part of a larger concert which includes further works. How could anyone keep writing symphonies after Beethoven? Johannes Brahms struggled with his work for a long time, and his efforts paid off.

Herbert Blomstedt never made a bad recording in San Francisco. Indeed, many of them are reference recordings, especially those with the first-class San Francisco Symphony Chorus: Grieg’s complete Peer Gynt Incidental Music, the Brahms German Requiem and other choral works, and Orff’s Carmina Burana. Blomstedt’s tenure in San Francisco had its controversial points. His programming could be dull, but that’s the difference between a great record and a great concert. We listen to works on disc individually, and don’t have to sit through an entire program of miscellaneous stuff pre-selected by a conductor with very specific and/or limited tastes. Blomstedt’s music-making has the kind of integrity usually ascribed to artists like Giulini, only with more consistency.
