The Wonder, released in 1990, is Tom Verlaine's sixth solo album. It was engineered by Mario Salvati. Mixed by Tom Verlaine and Fred Smith except side 1 tracks 1, 2, 4, 5 and side 2 track 1 mixed by Julian Mendelsohn. Side one. Side two. 2 Personnel.

All the selections here feature upfront, often thudding drumming - whether the number warrants it or not. Some potentially good material gets ill-considered treatment here; "Prayer" might have been haunting and warm, "Pillow" could have been touchingly expressive, and "August" might have been subtly intriguing except for the drumbeat and vocals imposed upon them. All songs written by Tom Verlaine. Kaleidescopin'.

Well, Tom Verlaine has often placed the music, and peace of mind, above the demands of the music biz in his priorities. But The Wonder collects 10 beautiful songs, in a range of tempos and moods from guitar-powered rockers to lush ballads, with the intricate and perfectly realized arrangements that Verlaine's studio recordings are known for. And though he is not a great singer, he is better here than on any previous record, achieving a warm, intimate tone except when the music calls for more drama. However, the album is far from perfect. The drumming throughout tends to be a repetitive dull thud, to the extent that drummer Jay Dee Daugherty might well have been replaced by a drum machine-or the one-armed guy from Def Leppard-and you wouldn't have been able to tell the difference.

Tom Verlaine (born Thomas Miller, December 13, 1949, in Morristown, New Jersey) is a singer, songwriter and guitarist, best known as the frontman for the New York rock band Television.
