The Singles: 1969–1973 is an album by the brother/sister pop duo the Carpenters. A greatest hits collection, it topped the charts in the United States and the United Kingdom and became one of the best-selling albums of the 1970s

Listen to The Singles 1969–1973 right now. In Britain, the retrospective also topped the album chart (for 17 weeks in all, the last of them in July 1974), spending a staggering 112 weeks in the top 40, and 136 in the top 75. In fact, it became one of the bestselling albums of the decade, eventually going 17 times platinum. When it came to The Singles 1969-1973, it seemed like every home had one. The Carpenters’ track record of hits, and their ability to appeal to a broad spectrum of listeners, were in part what made the album so successful. By definition ‘Greatest Hits’ records are all killer.

Singles (1969-1981) expands the popular Singles (1969-1973) album with more of the group's later hits, such as "Please Mr. Postman," "Only Yesterday," "Touch Me When We're Dancing," and "I Won't Last a Day Without Yo. "(They Long to Be) Close to You," "We've Only Just Begun," "Superstar," and other '70s hits are still here, making this a definitive collection of their best-known songs.

Heard together, the duo's hits prove that Richard Carpenter didn't study music at Yale for nothing. His clean arrangements, delicate piano turns and conservatively employed strings enhance almost every cut, and after a few tracks it becomes obvious his contributions have been grossly underestimated. Richard and John Bettis wrote the lilting ballad for the A Song For You album in 1972, but the consensus at A&M and in the Carpenters camp was that it wasn’t quite strong enough for single release. When Karen and Richard moved on to their next album, Lynn Anderson covered Top and promptly landed a N. country hit. There were other signs that the Carpenters had underrated the song: It made radio station play lists on requests alone; it went gold in Japan.

This is the Carpenters' first greatest hits album, "The Singles: 1969-1973. The album reached on the UK and US album charts in 1974, and became one of the top-selling albums of the 1970s. This is the 2013 Universal Music Japan remaster, supervised by Richard Carpenter, and used for the 2014 Platinum SHM-CD and SHM-SACD releases in Japan. This is widely regarded as the best-sounding version of the Carpenters' material found anywhere, and is one of the best-sounding SHM-CDs period. Enjoy the album! Track Listing.
