It's Our Thing is the sixth album released by The Isley Brothers on their own T-Neck Records imprint on April 26, 1969. Fully emancipated from three and a half years in Motown Records and encouraged by their international success in England, the Isleys composed this album in the style of Sly & the Family Stone/James Brown funk that was dominating the music industry at the time but with their own flair as explained in their smash "It's Your Thing".

A very important album for the Isley Brothers, 1969's It's Our Thing found Ronald, O'Kelly and Rudolph Isley reviving their T-Neck label and marked the beginning of their association with Buddah (where they would remain until moving T-Neck to Epic/CBS in 1973). Creatively, this excellent LP put the siblings in the driver's seat - they did all of the producing and songwriting themselves - and they enjoyed the type of artistic freedom that they could only dream about when they were with Tamla/Motown from 1965-1968

It’s Your Thing was a popular saying at the time and wonderfully ambiguous, so it could have a sexual connotation or simply be about personal independence.

It's absorbing, due to the Isley Brothers' ability to shift with the fashions, their dogged work ethic and embrace of recorded music as commercial product. At their peak, they delivered hot funk and smooth soul every year without fail-sometimes splitting an album in two so there was a fast side and a slow side-and there is something to be said for that regularity: when you laid down your money, you knew the Isleys would deliver the goods. With this 1969 hit, along with the It's Our Thing album that accompanied it, the Isley Brothers embraced the now of '60s soul. The album was very much their thing: they threw in everything they had in reviving their indie T-Neck, abandoning the uptown soul without losing sight of a pop audience while also deepening the groove, all giving them their biggest hit to date.

It's Your Thing" is a funk single by The Isley Brothers. Released in 1969, the anthem was an artistic response to Motown chief Berry Gordy's demanding hold on his artists after the Isleys left the label in late 1968. The lyrics of the chorus, which also serve as first verse, run: "It's your thing/ Do what you wanna do/ I can't tell you/ Who to sock it to". The song is ranked on the Rolling Stone magazine's list of The 500 Greatest Songs of All Time.
