Tantamount To Treason Volume 1 (also known as simply Tantamount to Treason) is Michael Nesmith's fourth solo album during his post-Monkees career. Released in 1972, Tantamount To Treason is the only album Michael Nesmith recorded and released with the Second National Band. An assumed sequel (Tantamount to Treason Vol. 2) was said to have been recorded but was never released. Even so, Nesmith has personally stated that a follow up 'never happened and all rumors are false'.

Nesmith then formed The Second National Band, who recorded the next album, TANTAMOUNT TO TREASON, VOLUME ONE, originally released in early 1972. These two albums make up the second "two-fer" in the BMG Camden Deluxe Nesmith series. Tantamount to Treason seems to take a lot of criticism. After listening to the album a few times, I have nothing but praise. While Nevada Fighter is very consistent with Mike's First National Band material, TtT shows Nesmith reaching a new artistic milestone. If you don't believe Mike was as much of a musical genius as say, Brian Wilson, you probably won't quite get my enthusiasm.

The most notable variation between the two units lies in the ethereal style which Nesmith delivers his earthy d lyrics and melodies. From right out of the starting gate, Papa Nez unleashes the atypically heavy "Mama Rocker" - which would not have sounded out of place on an early MC5 record. Even compared to his edgier material like "Mama Nantucket," this track is on the verge of early-'70s electric heavy metal. These anomalies aside, however, the rest of the album consists of a decidedly more pastoral pastiche of songs. In the Afternoon" is particularly appealing, and features a blend of folkie-tinged psychedelia with Nesmith's trademark winsome lyrics.
