David Vickerman Bedford (4 August 1937 – 1 October 2011) was an English composer and musician. He wrote and played both popular and classical music. He was the brother of the conductor Steuart Bedford and the grandson of the composer, painter and author Herbert Bedford and the composer Liza Lehmann. From 1969 to 1981, Bedford was Composer in Residence at Queen's College, London.

Star Clusters, Nebulae & Places In Devon, The Song Of The White Horse by David Bedford. Suddenly It’s Evening, Music For Albion Moonlight by David Bedford. Nurses Song With Elephants by David Bedford.

Not strictly speaking a rock piece, this work started life as a children's opera but reached the world as a finished recording.

The album itself comprises of two parts, Rime Of The Ancient Mariner 1 & 2. Oldfield's association with David Bedford went back to The Kevin Ayers and the Whole World band. While Oldfield was flexing his creative muscle and getting frustrated within the confines of that band he confided more and more with David Bedford and struck up a strong rapport with the keyboard player that lasted long after 1975.

It is an ancient Mariner, And he stoppeth one of three. The Sun came up upon the left, Out of the sea came he! And he shone bright, and on the right. Went down into the sea.

The narration is taken from the prose gloss which Coleridge added to his poem for the 1817 edition. This composition is not intended as a literal musical illustration of the entire poem. It is rather an attempt to evoke the mood and atmosphere of certain crucial episodes. The music which opens and closes the piece (and indeed recurs throughout) is an arrangement of Tielman Susato's Basse Danse 'La mourisque' published in 1561. The song on Side 2 is my arrangement of a traditional sea-shanty 'The Rio Grande'.
