The Life and Times of Country Joe and the Fish is a compilation album by the American psychedelic rock band Country Joe and the Fish and was released on Vanguard Records in September 1971 (see 1971 in music). The album provides a summary of Country Joe and the Fish's history from their formation in 1965 to their disbandment in 1970, and also serves as a survey of their recording career during that span.

His band, Country Joe & The Fish, made truly one of the very first, and by many opinions, the very best psychedelic rock album. Let’s start at the very beginning. Soon you started to record what is in my opinion the very best psychedelic rock album out there – ‘Electric Music For The Mind and Body’. Your producer was Sam Charters, who was also a well respected blues writer, poet and of course a producer. Album was recorded at Sierra Sound Recording.

Together, Country Joe & the Fish's third album, was the group's most consistent, most democratic, and their best-selling record. Unlike their first two albums, which were dominated by Country Joe McDonald's voice and compositions, Together featured the rest of the band - guitarists Barry Melton and David Cohen, bassist Bruce Barthol, and drummer Chicken Hirsh - almost as prominently as McDonald. Thereafter, McDonald and Melton fronted various Fish aggregations, but it was never the same, even when this lineup regrouped for Reunion in 1977.

This intelligently assembled nineteen-track compilation covers the years that Country Joe & The Fish, in its various line-ups, existed as a working band before Joe McDonald embarked on a solo career with many album issues on Vanguard and Fantasy Records during the seventies. The group in its generally accepted classic line-up form that cut the first three albums may have looked like models for Gilbert Shelton’s Fabulous Furry Freak Brother comic book characters, although the delicacy of their music often belied this

Country Joe and the Fish formed as a duo in 1965 with Country Joe McDonald and guitarist Barry The Fish Melton, before expanding into a full band with the additions of Bruce Barthol on bass, David Cohen on guitar and keyboards and John Francis Gunning on drums (replaced by Gary Chicken Hirsh a year later). Paul Armstrong on bass, tambourine and other percussion instruments was also an early member but dropped out shortly into in the band’s career. Country Joe and the Fish played the Monterey Pop Festival in 1967 and later played Woodstock as well
