The first Megadeth album since 1990 to feature a lineup change, Risk marks the studio debut of drummer Jimmy DeGrasso with the band, as well as the final appearance of longtime guitarist Marty Friedman, who announced his departure a year later.

Even the drummer hated one of the songs from this album. However, it's not really as bad as people love to make it out to be.

Since then I've softened up, and given other genres of rock music a chance. Unsurprisingly, when I came back to this album, I enjoyed it a hell of a lot more than I did before. Since then, I've come to the realization that Risk is a great album. Not the band's best of course, but still great. Risk will appeal more to the fans of modern rock than that of metal. The music is a lot mellower than anything the band has done, past or present.

Risk is the Megadeth album I've most anticipated hitting, and as if it's really any kind of surprise, I actually dig this record. It's got a bad rep, and lord knows it's anything but a thrash record, but one dimensional is the last phrase that I would use to describe this. Overall, Risk is a mixed bag of mostly uninspired catchy radio rock and hints at a Megadeth that wanted to branch out, or perhaps Mustaine simply wanted to beat Metallica at their own game and show that he could one up them and do commercial rock better. Either way, Risk was an album that hurt Megadeth in the long run.
