Cryptic Writings is the seventh studio album by American thrash metal band Megadeth. His departure would mark the end of the band's longest lasting lineup to date, having recorded four studio albums. Megadeth decided to produce the record with Dann Huff in Nashville, Tennessee, because they were not satisfied with their previous producer Max Norman.

Cryptic Writings continues this evolution, which unfortunately reads better than it plays. Megadeth doesn't quite have the skill or imagination to craft such ambitious material; they sound better playing thrash, which they only occasionally do on Cryptic Writings. Essentially, the band sounds tired and listless instead of reflective, especially since the production is so slick. It's admirable that the group is attempting to move forward, but the music simply doesn't resonate.

When Cryptic Writings was released, on 17 June 1997, Megadeth were riding the crest of a commercial wave. It debuted at N. on the Billboard 200, only held off the top spot by Billy Ray Cyrus. In 1993 the album was nominated for the Best Metal Performance Grammy and, within two years of its release, had earned triple-platinum status. Megadeth followed that album’s playbook for its follow-up, Youthanasia, in 1994.

Every day discogs makes, there's one guy who tries to sell his disgusting uncovered press for 200 unbelievable €uros as if it was a new item every day and receive it in my inbox. We don't want a filthy Cryptic Writings, we want it repressed ! What are they waiting for ?

Being the completionst that I am, and non-fan of picture discs, I am almost ready to give up hope and just try to deal for this and Youthnasia. It's terrible what the late 90's did to vinyl, and for metal fans this just adds insult to injury. If you are hell bent on having a bands full collection like myself, you are getting gouged on what is likely the bands worst recordings. Of course for Megadeath that is not the case, I like these albums quite a bit. Just not sure how long I can hold out for a repress...
Brick my own
It's a mystery why they didn't think to at least include it in the picture disc vinyl reissue series. Those used the remixes, but the later albums sounded ok, Youthanasia remix doesn't sound much different to me. The vinyl quality is quite good for picture discs, and we're mastered at RTI, at least the US ones are.
