Roxy Music is the debut studio album by the English glam rock band of the same name. It was released on 16 June 1972. It was generally well received by contemporary critics and made it to number 10 in the UK Albums Chart.
For Roxy Music fans that came on board with Avalon, Manifesto or Flesh & Blood this collection will probably be the perfect compilation. Unfortunately for the bulk of fans and casual listeners this CD isn't the best place to start.
Heavier and hairier than most of their Krautrock contemporaries, the band melded elements of the Velvet Underground, Jimi Hendrix, Frank Zappa, Jefferson Airplane, Pink Floyd and Quicksilver Messenger Service with African, Asian and Indian influences to create something deeply personal and even more deeply weird. Prog disciples looked to . as one of the most promising supergroups ever - the band featured ex-members of King Crimson, Yes, Roxy Music and Soft Machine. But they only stuck around for about three years, creating an intensely melodic blend of prog and jazz fusion on their debut, achieving orchestral intricacy without drifting off into self-indulgence.
Avalon was Roxy Music's last album and their biggest seller. The band started out as more of a glam rock outfit, but they later turned to melancholy pop, with this song being the apotheosis of that sound.
Roxy Music kicked off their masterly For Your Pleasure album with the ebullient Do the Strand, a song about a made-up dance craze that tipped a chapeau to the fashionable London thoroughfare of the same name. Ferry’s words are daringly dandyish and frivolous, as he throws references aplenty from La Goulue (the French Can-can dancer) to Nijinsky (the Russian ballet dancer), artworks such as Guernica and the Mona Lisa, and even a witty play on words involving King Louis XVI ( Louis Seize he prefer laissez-faire le Strand ). The most commercially fruitful period in Roxy Music’s career came from 1978 to 1982, after an enforced sabbatical. Ferry had only really reformed the band because his patrician image was at such odds with punk and his career needing galvanising with the brand that had once so exemplified cool.
Roxy Music is an English rock band formed in 1970 by Bryan Ferry, who became the band's lead vocalist and chief songwriter, and bassist Graham Simpson. Alongside Ferry, the other longtime members were Phil Manzanera (guitar), Andy Mackay (saxophone and oboe) and Paul Thompson (drums and percussion).
