The Orchestre de Chambre de Lausanne (OCL, Lausanne Chamber Orchestra) is a Swiss chamber orchestra based in Lausanne, Switzerland. As a partner of the Lausanne Opera, the OCL regularly appears in the orchestra pit during the opera season. The OCL is also the first Swiss orchestra to engage a composer in residence every two years.

This lengthy serenade is the first of two that Mozart composed for the Haffner family. Father Sigmund was both a rich merchant and burgomaster, whose ennoblement in 1782 occasioned the second one, since lost (four movements of which, however, survive as the Symphony in D, K. 385, likewise called "Haffner" although neither label was the composer's). Indeed, the consensus is that the "Haffner" Serenade was his breakaway work for orchestra. Robbins Landon has called it "Mozart's first great orchestral work - that is, the first in which technical ability and musical genius are perfectly wedded. a work at whose artistic perfection one can only wonder.

The Haffner Serenade in D major was written in 1776 for Marie Elizabeth Haffner's wedding celebration and was commissioned by her brother Sigmund, later the recipient of the Haffner Symphony. Though this composition has elements of Mozart's symphonic style – particularly in its dramatic first and last movements, the grand Menuettos, and the sixth movement Andante – it is cast in eight movements of diverse character and has a casual ambience that belongs to the serenade. Sir Charles Mackerras and the Prague Chamber Orchestra play these serenades with an emphasis on charm over drama, and their relaxed performances are graceful and engaging.
