Claudio Arrau León (Spanish pronunciation: ; February 6, 1903 – June 9, 1991) was a Chilean pianist known for his interpretations of a vast repertoire spanning the baroque to 20th-century composers, especially Bach, Beethoven, Schubert, Chopin, Schumann, Liszt and Brahms. He is widely considered one of the greatest pianists of the twentieth century. Arrau was a pupil of Martin Krause, who was a student of Franz Liszt.

The Variations on a Theme of Paganini, Op. 35, is a set of piano variations based on Caprice no. 24 in A minor, from Niccolò Paganini's Op. 1. Composed in 1863 and published as a set of studies for piano, the work consists of two volumes, each of which opens with the original theme, followed by 14 variations
