936 is a 2011 neo-psychedelic album by Peaking Lights, a Spring Green, Wisconsin-based husband-and-wife duo of Aaron Coyes and Indra Dunis. Peaking Lights stepped outside of the lo-fi style of their previous recordings, recording in a studio for the first time, and infused their psychedelic pop style with sounds from dub and hypnagogic chillwave. 936 became independent label Not Not Fun's best-selling release, and was consequently picked up for UK release by Weird World.

Peaking Lights work like a kaleidoscope, and not only because their music is so richly colored and fluid. The basic patterns are laid out right in front of you- catchy drum loops, loping bass rhythms, oily groove patterns- while the smaller, stranger details in your periphery help tie everything together. Take "Birds of Paradise (Dub Version)", a song that best characterizes Peaking Lights' . Aaron Coyes lets the clunky drums and bass line anchor the song neatly, while Indra Dunis provides some bewitching, hymn-like vocals
Peaking Lights' style is very rhythmic and dense-sounding, with heavy and distorted drum patterns and baselines taking up much of the aural space. The remainder is filled by compact, sunny guitar riffs and the lead singer's deadpan vocals, both of which break through the low-end mix enough to convey the sentiments of what are mostly love songs. So there is a captivating dichotomy between dense sound and a simple and clear lyrical message. Peaking Lights fits into that Caribou-Blue States sort of psychedelic electro-pop style that seemed like a happening thing in 2002-03. Their version is little bit dubbier, a little bit trancier, and perhaps a bit less rock n roll by extension. Their songs have a lot of layered synths and percussion, with little stabs of high reverb surf guitar and stuff as accents.
Peaking Lights: 936. November 19 2011, 12:01am, The Times. The second album from the Winconsin duo Aaron Coyes and Indra Dunis was originally released on Not Not Fun, the hipster LA label, but is getting a welcome UK release on Weird World. Coyes is an electronics whizz, building his own synths and effects boxes to give their music a unique sound. 936, their second album, takes in afrobeat, reggae, pop and krautrock, with lo-fi production that adds a rickety charm
