Creature Comforts is the second album by American experimental noise band Black Dice. It was released in June 2004 by DFA Records (USA) and Fat Cat Records (UK). The album was preceded by the Miles of Smiles EP in March of the same year. Most tracks were recorded at the Water Music, Rare Book Room and DFA's Plantain studios in New York City. Creature Comforts is Black Dice's fourth full-length, and second for DFA. Lo and behold, it doesn't sound like anything else they've released. This record is made from pedals, delay, computers, solemn guitar arpeggios, loops, robot jungle sounds and cosmic ambience. It's almost completely divorced from any strand of rock (or even punk), yet sits comfortably alongside fellow New York trippers Suicide and English provocateurs Throbbing Gristle

Previously New Yorkers Black Dice have had a fearsome reputation as purveyors of extreme sonic assault. But the mood here is much more relaxed than the previous album Beaches and Canyons mellow. Simple guitar figures weave away gently while a variety of machines burp, belch, twitter, shriek and talk to each other. The sounds they use are very raw, but are given lots of space to breathe. You feel that what you are hearing is natural, organic. The track "Creature" is well named

Despite the somewhat uneasy spirit that runs through the album, the album holds together from start to finish impressively. 70. It more or less picks up where Beaches and Canyons left off, allowing for more subtle changes in tone while distilling the Black Dice sound down to a considerably purer essence. 60. Like Sonic Youth reincarnated in Williamsburg, Black Dice evoke sublime psychological realms by making a racket.

Creature Comforts is really the most appropriate name that Black Dice could have given the album. There’s a sense of playfulness and an element of mischief that was absent from prior releases. I even heard that the group amuses themselves by inserting aberrant sounds into otherwise serene tracks. That said, those who plan on delving into Creature Comforts should do so with an open mind and a sense of humor.
