This album served as a prime example of this popular sound that was defined during the late 1960s but it also marked the downfall of Syd Barrett. During the tour of this album, he experienced severe mental breakdowns and bouts of schizophrenia which ultimately led to his disbandment with the band. Pink Floyd, then led by Syd Barrett, released their debut album 'Piper at the Gates of Dawn' on Aug. 4, 1967. We must remember that the Pink Floyd had no real parallel on these shores. The Grateful Dead were off on their own trip, so to speak, as were the Velvet Underground and the 13th Floor Elevators, the only other stateside experimentalists approaching the Floyd's terrain
