A Saucerful of Secrets is the second studio album by the English rock band Pink Floyd, released on 29 June 1968 by EMI Columbia in the United Kingdom (following adverts in Melody Maker giving that date) and released on 27 July 1968 in the United States by Tower Records. The album was recorded before and after Syd Barrett's departure from the group. With Barrett's behaviour becoming increasingly unpredictable, David Gilmour was recruited to compliment Barrett, and eventually to replace him.

The Piper at the Gates of Dawn is Pink Floyd's first album. Many people think it is one of the most influential albums in history. It had a very big influence on the psychedelic rock scene of the time, and also on the music that people made afterward. It is the only Pink Floyd album with Syd Barrett as the leader, although Barrett was on some of the next album, A Saucerful of Secrets.

Even though it was only Pink Floyd's second album, A Saucerful of Secrets is the literal sound of a band in transition, clinging to its past even as it plunges forward into the unknown. The album is often overlooked by casual fans. It isn't a front-to-back masterpiece like The Dark Side of the Moon or Wish You Were Here, and it lacks a distinctive radio classic. Though his whimsical brand of psychedelic pop was the band's original guiding force (he composed the bulk of their 1967 debut, The Piper at the Gates of Dawn), Barrett's erratic behavior and hard drug use nearly derailed Pink Floyd altogether. The remaining trio (bassist Roger Waters, keyboardist Richard Wright and drummer Nick Mason) recruited guitarist-singer David Gilmour, Barrett's old college friend, as a replacement. As a result, A Saucerful of Secrets is also the birth of the Gilmour era - and the music reflects this artistic disparity.

Tracklistings come from MusicBrainz. org It was lucky that, by this time, the album was mostly completed, because it was this sudden propulsion into the limelight that was to prove poor Syd’s undoing. Enforced ‘package’ tours with other chart acts (as well as the equally bemused Jimi Hendrix Experience) were to prove too much exposure for the deeply insecure artist. Syd’s guitar is fabulously lithe.
