Designed as a companion piece to the original Journey Greatest Hits - a compilation released some 23 years earlier in 1988 and reissued on vinyl the same week this sequel arrived in 2011 - Greatest Hits, Vol. 2 collects the singles, album rock hits, and album tracks that didn’t make it onto the first hits disc.

The six songs only disc 2 of Essential were not songs I really wanted, so I stuck with GH1&2. I bought this album to bring those times back, and they do. I put in the discs and instantly I'm transported back to running wild with my brothers and sister on a remote SE Alaskan beach, building forts in the forest and fending off the rare visitor with home made bows and arrows. My dad wired our floathouse home to have outside speakers and Journey and Steve Perry's incomparable vocals blasted across the bay where humpback whales fed and leaped, through the forest where we often heard wolves howling, or into the sky where the eagles flew.
