and Your Ass Will Follow is the second studio album by American funk band Funkadelic, released in July 1970 by Westbound Records. The album was recorded at United Sound Studios, Audio Graphic Services, and G-M Recording Studios in Detroit. The inspiration for this album was, according to George Clinton, an attempt to "see if we can cut a whole album while we're all tripping on acid.
This album epitomizes the aforementioned, thoroughly. Funky Dollar Bill, I Wanna Know If It’s Good To You, and Some More are also feral and heavy funk numbers of a psychedelic nature that require top volume as well. If one were to categorize the music on this warped disc, it would be ‘punk funk’. The Motown session players have gone; this is entirely a Funkadelic affair, and a particularly nasty one at that. Legend has it Overlord George Clinton decided to record an album in one day with the entire group spacing out on acid.
Free your mind (will you free your mind?) And your ass will follow (and your ass will follow) I have never, never never Never in my life Have this given to me. Free your mind and your ass will follow Not like you You are as free as you want to be (your ass will follow). Well, I discovered that this life that was gettin' to me Is not really mine (Free your mind and your ass will follow) If it were mine, I would have fun all of the time I'm very disgruntled now Now, I want a way out, now I have to find a way I have to find some way out Free your mind.
The album and its title track, a feedback-drenched number taking a third of the album's length, introduces the subversion of Christian themes explored on later songs, describing a mystical approach to salvation in which "the Kingdom of Heaven is within" and achievable through freeing one's mind, after which one's ass will follow Reception.
When he formed Funkadelic (with some of his Parliaments bandmates), he took them in a different direction, which was fully realized in this song. Clinton worked for Motown for a time, which adhered to strictures that kept hits flowing by following certain conventions. Any conventions were defenestrated on "Free Your Mind," which set the tone for future Funkadelic output. In 1992, En Vogue had a hit with "Free Your Mind," which used the hook, "Free your mind and the rest will follow
Free your mind (will you free your mind?) And your ass will follow (and your ass will follow) I have never, never never Never in my life Had this given to me. Free your mind and your ass will follow Say your mind Not like you, boy (not like you) You are as free as you want to be (your ass will follow).
