Brothers and Sisters is the fourth studio album by American rock band The Allman Brothers Band. Co-produced by Johnny Sandlin and the band, the album was released in August 1973 in the United States by Capricorn Records. Following the death of group leader Duane Allman in 1971, the Allman Brothers Band released Eat a Peach (1972), a hybrid studio/live album that became their biggest yet. Afterwards, the group purchased a farm in Juliette, Georgia, to become a "group hangout".

By the time they released Brothers And Sisters in 1973, The Allman Brothers Band had already lost lead guitarist Duane Allman in a motorbike accident, and had established themselves as the premier jam band with 1971’s epic Live At Filmore East. The band regrouped with a new line-up to record Brothers And Sisters a well-crafted album glistening with warm, mid-70s production. The songs stand up to this day, although the country influences were beginning to outweigh the blues, and it can't have helped that during the making of the album, Gregg Allman would sneak away to a neighbouring studio to work on a batch of songs that didn’t quite fit the band. The result, Laid Back, was Gregg’s private eulogy for Duane.

Released a year after Eat a Peach, Brothers and Sisters shows off a leaner brand of musicianship, which, coupled with a pair of serious crowd-pleasers, "Ramblin' Man" and "Jessica," helped drive it to the top of the charts for a month and a half and to platinum record sales. This was the first album to feature the group's new lineup, with Chuck Leavell on keyboards and Lamar Williams on bass, as well as Dickey Betts' emergence as a singer alongside Gregg Allman

Brothers and Sisters. Rmst ed. Reissued, Remastered. Their first full studio album without guitarist Duane, 1973's Brothers and Sisters doesn't match what came before it but would probably be considered a masterpiece if it came from most other bands. The Allman(s) move away from their rougher blues rock toward a groovier Southern rock, a shift that reflects the increased influence of Dickey Betts and new pianist Chuck Leavell.

Brothers and Sisters was the first album the Allman Brothers Band recorded after Duane's death, and it's a transitional record as much as it is a traditional one. It was the group's most mainstream-sounding album at the time, which paid off: Brothers and Sisters is their only No. 1 LP. Betts has more of a presence on the album, including this playful instrumental he named after his daughter. It's a tight performance, which, of course, would gain even more momentum in concert. Brothers and Sisters closer makes for a quite suitable one, heavily showcasing the band’s southern roots, while an abundance of neat little fills and a steady, slow gallop temp play off them nicely. There’s little doubt that this album’s age has kept it under the radar with some fans, and that the jam aspect of the music has driven off potential listeners without really giving the sound a chance. Let this one unwind over the course of several plays – it really isn’t that long a record, and it goes down pretty smooth. The Allman Brothers Band’s ability and willingness to overcome and flow with transitions is a testament to their skill and the acclaim they’ve accumulated over the last few decades.
