Pure Comedy is the third studio album by American folk musician Josh Tillman under his pseudonym Father John Misty. Its release was announced on January 23, 2017. It was released on April 7, 2017 on Bella Union in the UK and Europe and on Sub Pop in the rest of the world. This is Tillman's third studio album since his departure from Fleet Foxes. It was produced by Josh Tillman in collaboration with Jonathan Wilson, sound engineer Trevor Spencer and ist Gavin Bryars.

The third album from Father John Misty was released on April 7, 2017, via Sub Pop Records. Sonically, the album sounds similar to Misty’s previous release, with Honeybear collaborator Jonathan Wilson returning as the producer. But lyrically, the album shifts from the more personal songwriting of Honeybear, which Misty explains in an interview with Zane Lowe on Beats 1: I just knew I wanted to make something fundamentally different than anything I had made before, and so my life was gonna have to reflect a fundamental change too.

Father John Misty (Josh Tillman) delivers one of the year’s most demanding, yet well-rounded albums with ‘Pure Comedy. The return of Father John Misty (Josh Tillman) is BIG deal. Tillman is one of the most gifted songwriters in modern times. While he has more of a cult following as opposed to mainstream, his gifts are indisputable. Two years after releasing the painfully underrated I Love You, Honeybear (2015), he returns with his third studio album, Pure Comedy. The comedy of man starts like this, Our brains are way too big for our mother’s hips, And so nature, she divines.

Lyrics to "Pure Comedy" song by Father John Misty: The comedy of man starts like this Our brains are way too big for our mothers' hips And so Nature, . .The comedy of man starts like this Our brains are way too big for our mothers' hips And so Nature, she divines this alternative We emerged half-formed and hope that whoever greets us on the other end Is kind enough to fill us in And, babies, that's pretty much how it's been ever since.

Album · 2017 · 13 Songs. Josh Tillman’s third album as Father John Misty is a wry and passionate complaint against nearly everything under the sun: Politics, religion, entertainment, war-even Father John Misty can’t escape Father John Misty’s gimlet eye. But even the wordiest, most cynically self-aware songs here ( Leaving . When the God of Love Returns There’ll Be Hell to Pay ) are executed with angelic beauty, a contrast that puts Tillman in a league with spiritual predecessors like Randy Newman or Harry Nilsson.

Towards the end of Pure Comedy’s 13-minute centrepiece track, Josh Tillman offers a glum assessment of the album’s commercial chances. His career’s current status, he claims, is under threat. And it’s in the lyrics that the really dramatic, potentially alienating shift has taken place. I Love You, Honeybear and Father John Misty’s 2012 debut, Fear Fun, offered a very 21st-century spin on a well-worn musical trope. He certainly sounded like an old-fashioned confessional singer-songwriter – his music frequently seemed like a product of early-70s Los Angeles, where baring one’s soul became very big business indeed – but Tillman seemed to have changed the very notion of the confessional singer-songwriter to suit the post-truth era.

Father John Misty is coming back in a big way. A day after dropping the Donald Trump-baiting single/video "Pure Comedy," the singer (born Josh Tillman) has announced an album of the same name, due out on Apr. 7. The 75-minute, two-LP follow-up to his acclaimed 2015 sophomore album I Love You, Honeybear is accompanied by a 25-minute documentary on the making of the new music. Pure Comedy was co-produced by Tillman and Jonathan Wilson, while the film was directed by the singer and Grant James

No problems whatsoever with this pressing, quiet and dynamic. Haven't tested against other pressings of this album so no comparison info but really no need, this is solid.
