Though I do believe Hill makes some important discoveries here, this is a very serious, stony-faced, methodical album, without an ounce of fun to temper its academic inflection. Point of Departure is an exercise in excess - proof that shocking, far-out music can become boring very quickly if presented without incentive to keep listening. 2 people found this helpful.

Point of Departure is the fifth album by jazz pianist and composer Andrew Hill, recorded and released in 1964 on the Blue Note label.

Andrew Hill was a jazz pianist who only made the music he wanted to make. He is probably better known for this album than for all the other albums of his rather big oeuvre. Hill's complex constellations in the early and mid-60's stretched widely between well-known post-bop and avant-garde jazz

Point of Departure, with its all-star lineup (even then), took jazz and wrote a new book on it, excluding nothing. With Eric Dolphy and Joe Henderson on saxophones (Dolphy also played clarinet, bass clarinet, and flute), Richard Davis on bass, Tony Williams on drums, and Kenny Dorham on trumpet, this was a cast created for a jazz fire dance  . Point Of Departure is not only one of the greatest jazz recordings of 1964, but of all time. The stellar lineup (Eric Dolphy, Kenny Dorham, Joe Henderson, Richard Davis and a teen aged Tony Williams) was given a set of challenging compositions by the brilliant pianist and composer Andrew Hill. This group created the album known as Point of Departure, an acknowledged modern day classic and one of Blue Notes most extraordinary recordings. Andrew Hill was a quiet revolutionary, but he was every bit as original in his conception as Thelonious Monk
