James Victor Chesnutt (November 12, 1964 – December 25, 2009) was an American singer-songwriter from Athens, Georgia. His first album, Little, was released in 1990, but his breakthrough to commercial success did not come until 1996 with the release of Sweet Relief II: Gravity of the Situation, a charity record of alternative artists covering his songs.

The Salesman and Bernadette is a 1998 album by Vic Chesnutt. The backing musicians on the album are from the American alternative country group Lambchop. All songs written by Vic Chesnutt. Bernadette and Her Crowd" – 3:40. Until the Led" – 3:38. Scratch, Scratch, Scratch" – 2:53. Mysterious Tunnel" – 5:42. Arthur Murray" – 4:07. Woodrow Wilson" – 3:52.

Vic Chesnutt's sound gets an overhaul here with help from the 12-piece juggernaut Lambchop. Duty Free," "Bernadette and Her Crowd," and "Scratch, Scratch, Scratch" evoke the slow, lonely sounds of Chesnutt's early recordings. For "Replenished," Lambchop pumps up the horns and the festive grooves to give Chesnutt some healthy funk. Until the Led" starts with a quick indie rock tempo before the brass section kicks in for the bridge and chorus.

The Salesman and Bernadette. Sounding more upbeat and a whole lot more soulful than on previous outings, Vic Chesnutt has invited the Dixie-fried experimental group Lambchop along with his wife Tina into the studio for his sixth album, a concept about a traveling salesman. Salesman and Bernadette sounds less like his usual doleful, sometimes baleful, Southern Gothic self and is perhaps his best recording yet. Chesnutt's is a vulnerable voice, and though he can project frailty, his . isn't pity-inducing; in fact, he's quite humorous. Duty Free" sounds like a New Orleans funeral march.
