John Coltrane died 50 years ago this week. In the intervening decades, the saxophonist’s reputation has suffered not the tiniest decline. One could comfortably list 50 essential tracks by Coltrane, but we have only so much time on this earth. To make the task a little easier, we have stuck to recordings that list Coltrane as leader. So, you won’t see anything from Miles Davis’s Kind of Blue. The track is essentially an entire vinyl album. But it would be a scandal to leave out Coltrane’s exhaustingly powerful experiment in big-band free jazz. Begins with a crazy fanfare to the heavens and goes on to invite solos from a host of talent including Freddie Hubbard, Pharoah Sanders and Archie Shepp. 2. A LOVE SUPREME Part I – ACKNOWLEDGMENT – From A Love Supreme (1965) – Another slight cheat. Acknowledgement is just one part of an album that forms a coherent suite on the theme of faith.
In this period, Coltrane's explorations sound best when he's grounded by a strong chord progression that's inherently melodic, and "Solacium" is the perfect example of that. John Coltrane – tenor saxophone Paul Quinichette – tenor saxophone Julian Euell – double bass Ed Thigpen – drums Mal Waldron – piano. Not one of the better releases, this album sees some pretty forgettable tunes and is brought down by Quinchette's lacklustre playing. I will throw a bone to "Anatomy", where John takes a rather impressive solo. Other than that not much is going to stand out.
An album of previously unheard original compositions by the legendary jazz saxophonist has been discovered 55 years after its recording. Sonny Rollins, a peer of Coltrane’s and also regarded as one of the greatest jazz saxophonists of all time, described the discovery as like finding a new room in the Great Pyramid. Among the seven tracks are two completely unheard original compositions, called Untitled Original 11383 and Untitled Original 11386, both of which are played on soprano saxophone
Released in 2000, The Very Best of John Coltrane is hardly the first best-of collection by the seminal saxophonist, and you can bet certain that it won't be the last. Seasoned Coltrane fans will already be familiar with these essential 1959 and 1960 recordings, so the person that Rhino obviously had in mind when it released this disc was the casual listener. All of Coltrane's Atlantic output is worth owning, and most of it is truly essential. But for those who have yet to experience the joys of Coltrane's Atlantic period and need a course in Introductory Coltrane 101, this CD would be a very rewarding and logical starting point.
John William Coltrane (September 23, 1926 – July 17, 1967) was an American jazz saxophonist and composer. Working in the bebop and hard bop idioms early in his career, Coltrane helped pioneer the use of modes and was at the forefront of free jazz. He led at least fifty recording sessions and appeared on many albums by other musicians, including trumpeter Miles Davis and pianist Thelonious Monk. Over the course of his career, Coltrane's music took on an increasingly spiritual dimension
