Sun Ra & His Arkestra.

The shots of Sun Ra & His Arkestra are of particular note, as it is the only known footage to exist of the band in Chicago during their mid- to late-'50s residency.

The Cry of Jazz is set in Chicago at the meeting of a jazz appreciation club of musicians and intellectuals, both Black and White. It is broken up into seven parts. Bland knew Sun Ra personally, as they were both living in Chicago at the time. Additionally, Bland was aware that Sun Ra owned the rights to his music released through El Saturn Records, his personal record label

Artist: Sun Ra And His Arkestra. Album: The Spirit Of Jazz Cosmos Arkestra At Wuhy, 1978. Space (with Ra interview) 11 – Satellites Are SpinningThe Shadow World (with Ra inter 12 – Space is the Place (with Ra interview). Previously on NewAlbumReleases.

Where The Cry of Jazz operates most straightforwardly as a documentary, it captures the era's extant styles of jazz (whether you consider them living or, as Alex insists, dead) as performed by the composer-bandleader Sun Ra and his Arkestra just a few years before his total self-transformation into a sci-fi pharaoh.

Notes

Filmed in Chicago & finished in 1959, The Cry Of Jazz is filmmaker, composer and arranger Edward O. Bland's polemical essay on the politics of music and race - a forecast of what he called the Death of Jazz. The film foresaw the political unrest of the subsequent decades, and forms the only known footage of Sun Ra from his Chicago Period. This release is part of the Unheard Music Series.
