Mezzanine is the third studio album by English electronic music duo Massive Attack, released on 20 April 1998 by Circa and Virgin Records. Produced by Massive Attack and Neil Davidge, it saw the duo expanding their trip hop sound to electronica stylings, with diverse influences from new wave, rock, hip hop, and dub music.

Mezzanine will be 20 years old now this April. I don't know about you but I definitely feel a bit older having typed that. Mezzanine was my gateway drug into not only Massive Attack but into alternative and electronic music in general. Bear in mind I was in my earlier teens at the time, but Mezzanin.

On Mezzanine, Massive Attack tried to escape trip-hop. They nearly tore themselves apart and made its defining document instead. On Mezzanine, Massive Attack tried to escape trip-hop. Trip-hop eventually became a ’90s punchline, a music-press shorthand for overhyped hotel lounge music.

Released April 20, 1998. Tricky had split and three years had passed since Massive Attack’s last proper album, but Mezzanine returned the Bristol collective to prominence. Cocteau Twins' Elizabeth Fraser was the designated chanteuse, and her icy voice stands out against the earthy backdrops of songs such as Teardrop.
