Jaga Jazzist's first album ("Jævla Jazzist Grete Stitz") was released in 1994, when the group's youngest members were still only fourteen. It was, they have said, "an album about trying without fear of failing" and as such has served as a manifesto for much of what has followed since. After heavily touring, the time came for the next chapter in the Jaga Jazzist history, "What We Must". After months spent on writing new material, the band ripped it all up, went into an isolated studio out in the Norwegian woods and recorded the demo now known as the Spydeberg Session. Put down in one take in one day, it was a breakthrough moment for the group.

With What We Must, Jaga Jazzist turned the tables on the whole scene, introducing a whole new rock edge to the sound. The brand new use of the guitar as just a vital instrument as the tenor sax serves as the largest change in Jaga’s new sound. Before, the guitar had its features here and there but mainly just made chordal structure out of the songs while the wind instruments laid down the main melodies. This entire album is a breath of fresh air, an album with great variety and contrast throughout. The sound constantly changes as the band utilizes different instruments, including an extreme use of mallet percussion in I Have a Ghost, Now What" and Oslo Skyline. sounds as though it envisions a late night drive through the streets of Tokyo. is still a fantastic song with great replay value.

I re-listened this Jaga Jazzist album once again after I just received my fresh "One- Armed Bandit" version. It's often good to see some earlier works from the distance of time. So, even if during all their career band's music is placed somewhere in jazzatronics field, there is not possible to find two very similar albums. After overusing the drum machines and other effects on The Stix, Jaga Jazzist did another 180 degree turn with their 2005-release What We Must where they almost completely abandoned the style and went into a regular band direction. Incidentally, this was also my introduction to the band that did manage to leave quite enough impression on me to make me want to pursue the rest of their discography. Unfortunately time hasn't been all that kind to this release and listening to it today doesn't bring me as much joy since I now know what this band is actually capable of!

Jaga Jazzist (also known as Jaga) is an experimental jazz band from Norway that rose to prominence when the BBC named their second album, A Livingroom Hush (Smalltown Supersound/Ninja Tune), the best jazz album of 2002. The core of the band are the brothers and the main songwriters, Lars and Martin Horntveth. Martin formed Jaga Jazzist together with Ivar Christian Johansen in 1994 while they still were in their teens, though Johansen later left the group
