The gold-selling 1980 double-live album One for the Road is a fascinating document of trailblazing elder statesmen who paved the way for heavy metal and punk, but never felt a glorious pop song was out of their grasp. It also proves that Dave Davies is a criminally underrated lead guitarist. Brothers Dave and Ray Davies, bass guitarist Jim Rodford, drummer Mick Avory, and guest keyboardists Ian Gibbons and Nick Newell recorded One for the Road at several concerts in 1979 and 1980.

One for the Road is the twentieth music album by British rock group " The Kinks " from the year 1980 and was recorded live. The album contains the following titles: The entire plate is produced by Ray Davies. Was recorded the album with several concerts in the . and the concert on November 11, 1979 at the People's House in Zurich. After completion of their concept albums phase, where the Kinks had far more success than in their native England, but Davies also ran a little historical misrepresentation, because he had the new Kinks keyboardist Ian Gibbons take on some of the pieces, the parts later that the disgraced Gordon Edwards had played on stage. The album was praised by critics as one of the best live albums of the year 1980, which was but always pointed out that the recording quality.

One for the Road - a cleaned-up, carefully sequenced culling of live Kinks performances from six American cities and Zurich, Switzerland - succeeds in sounding like a single night’s work. It argues that experience can keep you alive in the trenches - as long as you keep moving. Using few overdubs and a minimum of talky transitions between cuts, the Kinks show their smarts by being very straightforward. Ray Davies could be pretty fashionable now, but it’d be the kind of fashionableness he excoriates here in Prince of the Punks. Why bother, when you’ve already begun the album by pinning everybody’s ears back with 103 seconds of string-popping instrumental intensity known the world over as You Really Got Me ? Sputtering feedback left and right. Dave Davies rips the wadding off You Really Got Me to uncover a snake charmer’s melody line under the crunchingly familiar riff.

On this 1980 live album, the first power chords of The Hard Way resume the full-on guitar pummel that first announced The Kinks with You Really Got Me. Their '70s hit Catch Me Now I’m Falling includes the riff from The Rolling Stones’ Jumpin’ Jack Flash. The Pretenders covered Stop Your Sobbing. The Jam nailed David Watts. Lola was again becoming a minor hit. As per usual, The Kinks admit what other bands won’t. They did careful overdubs on this live album to make it sound even better
