The title track from Gantz Graf inspired an iconic video by British designer Alex Rutterford, featuring an object (or an agglomeration of objects) synchronized to the music as it morphs, pulsates, shakes, and finally dissolves. Rutterford, who had previously created an unofficial video for the Tri Repetae track "Eutow" as part of the Channel 4 music programme Lo-Fi in 2001, claimed the idea for the "Gantz Graf" video came during one of his LSD trips . On 13 May 2016 a new Autechre track under the title of feed1 was played on Tom Ravencroft's late evening show on BBC 6 Music after an announcement made on the Warp Records Twitter feed which was accompanied by a piece of geometric album art. On 18 May 2016 a second new track was played on KSUA
Gantz Graf 's opener and title track wastes very little time hitting you with over-the-top beats and a distorted mix. There's a punchy melody comprised of successive synth jabs and some of the usual glitch trickery. The backdrop here, however, is somewhat prettier than usual, and I wonder whether the beat that obscures it was only placed in front to appease fans of the tried-and-true Autechre way. As the track wears on, the intruding rhythms grow progressively louder and busier, and a good nine minutes later have utterly overwhelmed the other elements.
When Autechre makes an album with less than 10 songs, it's never an EP; it's a complex mini-album. And Gantz Graf is no exception. It is a masterpiece, a glitch magnum opus. But it really pushes the boundaries of what defines music, and thus will never be admired by the masses. Gantz Graf" immediately separates the mice from the men and sends the mice scampering. This eponymous track is notorious by now, and that notoriety is well-earned; it's basically an already driving hiphop beat horrendously garbled by an onslaught of grain delay plug-ins . For the time being though, Gantz Graf contains some of their most innovative music yet and is definitely another example of experimental techno at its most cerebral and challenging.
